- Run SOF2 in Compatibility Mode
Right-click on the sof2mp.exe file or the SOF2 MP shortcut and choose "Troubleshoot Compatibility." This will take you through a guided process of running the program using settings from old versions of Windows. Test all available options as there's no telling which version will end up working for your particular machine.
- Rename sof2mp.exe to mohaa.exe
This one sounds weird, but actually works for a lot of people, due to a quirk with the Quake game engine that SOF2 is based on. Rename the sof2mp.exe file (not the shortcut) to "mohaa.exe" and launch the program.
- Download a client patch from 1fxmod.org
1fx does a lot to support SOF2 and the player community. One thing they offer is client patches, which are just modified versions of sof2mp.exe with a variety of benefits and tweaks, one of which is fixing the crash-on-startup issue associated with SOF2 on Windows 10. Simply visit 1fx Client Patches and download the relevant patched executable file.
- Install an older versions of Windows on a different partition
This option is a last-result but is pretty much guaranteed to work, and is the only one that ended up working for me in order to run SOF2 after upgrading to Windows 10. The solution is to install an older version of Windows on your machine, alongside of Windows 10. This is known as a "dual boot" and allows you to select which operating system you want to boot into when restarting or powering on your computer. It is actually easier than it sounds and there are many guides and tutorials online. Essentially you just need to create a partition on your hard drive and install a different version of Windows on it.
